As change inevitably comes to the idyllic resort, its history is preserved at the Barn Museum, a former carriage house on the property where guests can experience what life was like there back in the day. You’d never know that the spa section, which didn’t open until 2005, wasn’t always part of the main building. Any major structural changes are done to make it look like the new features were always there. The family reinvests what they make to maintain the original structure while making the necessary updates to keep up with the times. Decisions to change the property aren’t made lightly. Of course, as more people discovered Mohonk over time, expansions had to be made to accommodate. The property’s history dates back to 1869 when Quakers Albert and Alfred Smiley purchased a 10-room lakeside inn along with 300 acres of land in the Hudson Valley as a place to retire. The property has over 100 structures set up for guests to sit and enjoy the view.
